Travel Teams General Information

Our Travel Team program is the largest in the Northeast and includes over 110 players, on separate boys and girls teams, competing in 12 & Under, 14 & Under, 16 & Under and 18 & Under age groups.

Our Travel Team programs are open to everyone; selection is competitive.  Players come from all over Fairfield and Westchester Counties, New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.  They include public and private school players.

We compete locally, regionally and nationally in USA Water Polo & American Water Polo tournaments up and down the east coast.  We field teams for the annual Junior Olympics National Championships for all age groups (to be held this year in northern CA in late July/early Aug 2009).  We also field teams for the Speedo Cup National Championship (only for non-high school 14 & Unders-in to be held this year in Nov. 2009). Travel team players also are often selected to participate in trials for National Olympic & Age Group teams.

Our older players (typically high school age) train and compete internationallySince 2003, our European Travel Teams have been exposed to international competition and cultures on summer trips to Greece, Italy, Croatia, Serbia/Montenegro, Hungary and England.  In late June/early July 2009, we will again be sending girls and boys teams to Italy.

2010 Age Group Travel Teams

2010 Travel Team Tryouts will be held between March 9 and March 27.  We will field boys and girls teams at the 12 & under, 14 & under, 16 & under and 18 & under age groups.  Registration fees for our Travel Team is $195.  Click here to register.

Players age as of December 31, 2010 determines team assignment based on USA Water Polo, American Water Polo and FINA international rules.

Team selection is competitive.  We encourage each player to attend as many of their team tryout dates as possible.  Attendance at all tryout dates is not required, however.

2010 TravelTeam Practice Times

Weekly practice schedules will be set AFTER tryouts when we will decide how many teams we will form in each age group.

Expected 2010 Travel Team practice start dates are below:

12 and 14 & Under Boys & Girls Travel Teams: April.

16 and 18 & Under Girls Travel Teams: April.

(Note; While high school girls varsity water polo season runs from late March to mid-May, high school aged girls unaffiliated with a varisty program will practice with Boys Travel Teams.)

16 and 18 & Under Boys Travel Teams: April.

Junior Olympic (JO) Travel Teams start with a more limited practice schedule that will increase to approximately 3 times/week (including at least one each weekend) by April and continue into July.

Fall Speedo Cup Team tryouts and practices begin in mid-August/early September and continue through early November, with practices approximately 3 times per week.

Our Success

Our programs consistently produce strong players and teams.  Greenwich Water Polo Travel Teams have qualified to represent the USA Water Polo Northeast Zone (which extends from Maine to Virginia) at EVERY National Junior Olympics Tournament since we started competing in 2001.

Last year we sent six teams to the Junior Olympics--the most teams sent by any water polo club this side of the Mississippi!

For 7 of the last 8 years, our Boys 14 & Under Teams have been the SOLE representative of the Northeast Zone to the prestigious Speedo Cup National Championship Tournament.

For 4 of the last 5 years, our Girls 14 & Under Teams have accomplished that feat.

Our Travel Program graduates play water polo at top colleges and universities on the East and West Coasts and have won NCAA Chamionships and All-American and All-Conference honors in high school and in college.

Our secret for developing great players:  our coaching staff.  Lead by senior coaches Terry Lowe (long-time Greenwich High School Boys Varsity Coach), Bill Harris (Foreham University Men's Head Coach & Greenwich High School Varsity Girls Coach) and Year-Round Coach Paul Ramaley (Greenwich High School Boys Varsity Assistant Head Coach).

Others may talk about their programs, but THERE IS ONLY ONE GREENWICH WATER POLO.

THE BEST YOUTH WATER POLO PROGRAM FOR BOYS & GIRLS ON THE EAST COAST.
